IT Strategy Development for King Edward VI Grammar School

Challenge

Following the implementation of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategy, King Edward VI Grammar School faced ongoing network and server issues that impacted teaching and learning. To address these challenges, the school engaged PSP on a 24-month contract for Director of IT as a Service. An initial technology audit identified several key areas that required a strategic approach to modernise their IT infrastructure and support educational outcomes.

Solution

PSP’s Director of IT developed a comprehensive IT strategy for King Edward VI Grammar School, focusing on four critical areas: Infrastructure, Provision and Deployment, Skills and Training and Pedagogy.

The first step was to establish a "cloud-first" approach to IT infrastructure, laying the foundations for a 12-month transformation roadmap. This would enable the school to overcome existing network and server issues while creating a robust, scalable infrastructure. For Provision and Deployment, the strategy focused on the management, funding and support of devices for both staff and students, with an emphasis on meeting the Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) requirements by expanding access to 1:1 devices.

The strategy also addressed the Skills and Training needed to maximise the use of Microsoft 365 tools such as Teams, OneNote, Sway and Forms. To support these efforts, PSP launched a Technology Toolkit and introduced Digital Champions in each department. This initiative was supported by the creation of a Technology in Education Team site, enabling staff to share resources and collaborate on best practices for using technology in the classroom.

In the Pedagogy component, PSP’s Director of IT collaborated with the Deputy Head Academic to set clear objectives and success criteria, enabling Heads of Departments to integrate technology effectively into their teaching practices. The strategy provided guidance on practical applications such as verbal marking and digital inking for feedback, helping to streamline the feedback process and save time for teachers.

Result

The IT strategy implemented by PSP created a robust foundation for King Edward VI Grammar School to leverage technology as a powerful tool for teaching and learning. The cloud-first infrastructure reduced network issues, supporting a stable and scalable digital environment that met KCSIE standards. Through the training and support initiatives, teachers gained the skills to use Microsoft 365 tools effectively, leading to increased collaboration and engagement across the school.

Conclusion

With PSP’s Director of IT as a Service bringing 18 years of education sector experience, King Edward VI Grammar School now has a clear, milestone-driven digital strategy to support teaching and learning. By establishing success criteria and focusing on practical, time-saving tools like verbal marking and digital feedback, PSP’s strategy has empowered the school to integrate technology seamlessly into the classroom. This strategic approach allows King Edward’s educators to focus on teaching while using technology as a valuable enhancement to their toolkit.
